An in-depth look into the copyright law and mimicking of fonts and typefaces.
For my final dissertation at my University, I looked into a subject that I had not fully investigated before: the copyright law and protection of typefaces. As I had grown as a designer I had learnt to appreciate type and fallen in love with it as a element in design. However, I was curious how typefaces such as “Arial” and “Helvetica” could be so similar with no law suit taking place to claim copying. It was a subject I found was not something widely known or researched and books on the subject were scarce. In fact I found only a handful of printed resources but thousands of internet links.
Despite this I succeeded in writing my full dissertation and decided that using screen printed typography for the front cover would be a appropriate homage to traditional printing methods.
